What is a Subluxation?

A subluxation is a misalignment or partial dislocation of the spinal joints. This misalignment is accompanied with nervous system interference. Like a telephone with a bad connection, the messages don’t get from the sender (the brain) to the receiver correctly. Since the nerves of the spine control virtually every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body (including your vital organs) the results are usually devastating if not caught in time. Unfortunately since the body is so adaptable a subluxation can be present without your knowledge for some time before you feel symptoms and often by the time symptoms are discovered the subluxation has already advanced very far.

Chiropractors commonly recognize five categories of components present in the Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC).

Spinal Kinesiopathology (Abnormal motion or position of spinal bones) - is where the bones of the spine become stuck, don't move enough, or move too much. This can restrict your ability to turn and bend. It sets in motion the other four components.

Neuropathophysiology (Abnormal nervous system function) - nerves can become overexcited and hyperactive. Misalignment causes abnormal spinal function which can choke, stretch or irritate the delicate tissue of the spinal cord and nerves. This nervous system dysfunction commonly causes symptoms elsewhere in the body.

Myopathology (Abnormal muscle function) -The muscles that support the spine can become weak or tight and waste away. The resulting change in muscle tone can cause chronic misalignment requiring repeated spinal adjustments.

Histiopathology (Abnormal soft tissue function) - inflammation and swelling due to injured disc accompany the accumulation of blood and other body fluids causing a rise in temperature. this can cause other soft tissues to suffer permanant damage.

Pathophysiology (Abnormal function of the spine and body) - when there is trauma to a joint, one of the ways your body responds is the stabilization of the area by forming new bone! With time, calcium deposits build up, eventually as abnormal bony growth and bone spurs. This arthritic 'splinting' of bones is nature's attempt to stabilize the injured joint. If left uncorrected the affected joint will fuse.

The Vertebral Subluxation Complex may be one of the most regular yet overlooked source of health problems.
